Hi Explorers! Welcome to Mom and I Make Magic, where everyday moments become magical learning adventures. I'm your host Mom and today we're going on a thinking adventure together. Have you ever had a moment where you just didn't know what to do? Maybe your plans changed? Maybe you felt bored or a little upset. Let me tell you a story. One day there was a little boy named Oliver who had a big plan. He had been waiting all morning to go outside and play. He had his brand new ball ready and he was excited to meet his friend and play together in the park. He put on his shoes, picked up his ball and ran to the door. But just as he was about to step outside, the sky turned dark and gloomy, and suddenly it started to rain. Oh no, I can't go outside anymore, Oliver said, his shoulders dropping as he looked out the window. Oliver felt disappointed, maybe even a little frustrated. Have you ever felt that way? Let's pause because it's time for our magic thinking moment. Let's think together. What are some choices that Oliver has right now? Maybe he could sit and continue to feel upset. Or maybe he can find something fun to do inside instead. Or maybe he could pause and think with a trusted grown-up to help him come up with ideas. Let's try one choice first. If Oliver had just stayed upset, what might happen? He might feel even worse. Now let's try another choice. If Oliver looked for something fun to do, what could happen? Maybe he would start enjoying his day again. Or he could pause and think with a trusted grown-up to help him come up with ideas. That's a really helpful way to think too. Now let's try one choice together. Oliver took a deep breath and looked around his room. His ball was still in his hands. He bounced it once, twice, and then he had an idea. What if I make my own game inside? he thought. He set up a few pillows, lined up some toys, and stacked some cups, turning his room into a mini obstacle course. Soon he was rolling, tossing and chasing his ball in new and silly ways, even knocking down a tower he built with the cups. After a while, he wasn't thinking about the rain anymore. He was laughing and having so much fun. Just then his mom peeked in and said, That looks fun. Maybe we can build something together too. Oliver smiled. His day hadn't gone the way he planned, but it still turned into something fun. Oliver's story tells us that sometimes when things don't go the way we want, we can pause, think, and choose what to do next. Today's magical action is pause, think of your choices, ask yourself what might happen, and then choose one to try. And here is a little parenting pixie dust for all the grown-ups out there. When your child feels stuck, instead of immediately solving the problem for them, try pausing and gently asking, what are your choices? Giving children that moment to think helps them practice decision making and build confidence in their own ideas. You may be surprised by the thoughtful and creative solutions they come up with when they are given the space to choose. In my experience as a parent, children are incredibly smart. You may be surprised by the solution and the magic they discover on their own. Time for fun facts! Did you know when something doesn't go the way you planned, your brain can think of new ideas, and that's called problem solving. Magic isn't just in stories or movies, it's in the way you think. And remember, when you feel unsure, pause, think about your choices, and choose your own kind of magic. Also remember that the real magic is in the fun and laughter you share with those you love.
